to me

Hi Harry,

I wanted to pass on information from our conversations with hoteliers in France.

We ́ve been in touch with local authorities as well as caminos´ higher associations and hotel owners to have a clearer image of the situation on the 9th of March 2020.

We checked :
how the number of cases in that part of France compares to the rest of the country
the different responses from local governments in Occitan and
what to expect in the middle term future.

France has registered 1191 positive cases for 21 deaths. About 18 positive cases for one million people. The Occitan area (most of the Arles way) has registered about 50 cases of positive mild cases of the virus so far (no death).

Most of them (in the Herault department) are related to families who recently came back from Egypt and are in quarantine at the moment : https://france3-regions.francetvinfo.fr/occitanie/haute-garonne/toulouse/occitanie/cas-coronavirus-occitanie-point-agence-regionale-sante-1795889.html. The Lézignan-Corbières primary school had to close down for a couple of weeks because a teacher was tested positive ( https://france3-regions.francetvinfo.fr/occitanie/coronavirus-fermeture-ecole-lezignan-corbieres-aude-mise-quatorzaine-agents-scolaires-au-cres-herault-1796727.html) .

The ARS ( Regional Health agency) is working to delay the propagation of the virus, prohibiting political meetings or large sporting events

So far, no cases have been identified on the South of France´s caminos . No warnings have been issued from the health authorities regarding the Santiago ways in France, only recommendation to follow while walking the caminos : no hands shaking, properly washing hands and wait for warmer weather to walk.

The hotel owners we talked to over the phone comment that the cancellations they had recently were due to the bad weather conditions. Some people are ringing to get information about coronavirus on the camino and decide to keep their walking plans.

Hotel owners remind us that contamination in open air spaces is very unlikely and walkers reduce the probability of being contaminated if they stay in small accommodation (chambres d’hôtes (bed and breakfast) vs pilgrims hostels) .

Still as nobody can predict with certainty the evolution of the coronavirus situation in Europe, most of the hotel owners have introduced a flexible cancellation policy.

Once you’ve had a chance to think things over, please get in touch to discuss your options.

Best wishes,

to me, Caroline

Dear Harry,

Many thanks for your email which Caroline has passed to me.

Walk The Camino’s operations are governed by advice from the UK Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, (FCO).
There are currently no travel restrictions in any of the places where we operate.
There is a Coronavirus page on our website that is regularly updated.

You will find information and links to Government websites here.

At the moment, only 1 client has postponed their Via Francigena & 1 on the St Francis way.
Both of these routes are in Italy, although not in the restricted zones

Of course, we are keeping our ears to the ground in every country we operate.
Our baggage handler partners on the Camino in Spain, say that everything is operating as normal but everyone being made aware of the hygiene guidelines.
This is a fairly reliable indicator, as the drivers cover every mile of the Camino Frances every day. The Camino Aragon has no adverse news either.
I will be making contact with a few of our local French partners and I’ll be happy to share their comments.

Currently, we have no advice against travel along your route.
It really is a matter of personal choice and I won’t attempt to sway you either way.
The precautions of improved personal hygiene and avoid large crowds are widely reported globally.

One consideration, is whether you have any underlying health conditions.

If that is the case you should talk to your doctor. I assume that you already have travel insurance, so it would be a good idea to check your coverage.

You might check out travellers from which countries are currently have to self isolate for 14 days.
This advice appears relevant only to Americans returning from China.

I hope this helps Harry.

Kind Regards,
