Woke up late and had breakfast of the hotel. Adjusted shoe soles in the room by scraping some part of them to avoid pain suffered last week. Then, went for exploration of this Roman Town. the first place a pilgrim should go to was a church to get credential. As suggested by Walk The Camino(WTC), I visited The Church of Saint Trophime and asked attendant for credential. He, appeared to me older than I am, said the church did not have credential but if I had it he could stamp on it. I did not agree but I could not oppose what he said. I submitted credential that WTC sent me and he stamped on it. This is the end of the first job as a pilgrim and I went for lunch.
After the lunch, I went to explore the Roman remains, especially the Arena. At the entrance of Arena, the attendant gave me a map and I saw Camino Route was marked. I found the Camino started at Alyscan, graveyard of early days of Romans. Further, the attendant explained the Church of Saint Trophime should have issued a credential to me. After taking look of the Arena, I went back to the church. The attendant this time appeared to be little younger than the one in the morning. I asked him if he could issue me a credential and he said Yes, of course. I was so glad to came back and found out he was an Italian and we talked in Italian until we get apart. He showed how to go to the Alyscan and I went there. The place was marked as the starting point of the Camino Arles. I was so excited to be at the starting point of the Camino Arles. The attendant stamped on my credential and said admission was free for all the pilgrims. She suggested to visit Saint Trohime’s Cloister which I did and got stamped.
Now, I wanted to make sure the beginning of the Camino and walked as the map suggested. Each party insists their Camino with a slight difference. The city map, WTC’s electronic map and GR653 marking showed slight difference but all are indicating towards Saint Gilles.
The sun was going down and came back to the hotel after buying 3 litters of Evian. Tried telephone call but unable to call. Asked help with Naoko and we tried for few things but did not work. Asked hotel attendant for help but that did not work either. Went to dinner and came back.
ホテルで朝食をとり、靴の中敷きを調整しました。それからこのローマ人の町を見学に出ました。巡礼が出発地でまずしなければならない事は、クレデンシャルをもらう事です。これは、巡礼の身分証明書兼通過地の証明で、道中各所でスタンプを押してもらい、サンチアゴに着いた時に見せて、確かに巡礼路を歩いてきましたので、巡礼証明書をくださいと言う時に使います。旅行社Walk The Camino（WTC)のかねてよりの助言により、The Church of Saint Trophimeに行って、係の人にクレデンシャルの交付をお願いしました。係の人は、私よりも年長と見受けましたが、教会にはクレデンシャル用紙はないが、自分が用紙を持っているならスタンプは押してあげられると言いました。私はこの教会のクレデンシャル用紙があるはずと思いましたが、一応彼の言うとおり、WTCがくれたクレデンシャル用紙にスタンプを押してもらいました。これで、巡礼の最初の仕事は終わり、ランチに行きました。
昼食後、ローマの遺跡を見に行きました。特に円形闘技場には一番に行きました。円形闘技場の切符売り場の係は、地図をくれ、それにはカミノのルートが書いてありました。ローマ時代からの墓地であるAlyscanからカミノが出発しているのが分かりました。さらに、係の人はChurch of Saint Trophimeは、私にクレデンシャルを発行すべきであると言いました。闘技場を一応見学してから、教会に戻りました。今度の係のひとは、朝の人よりも少し若いようでした。彼にクレデンシャルを発行してほしいとお願いすると、勿論、と言ってこの教会のクレデンシャル用紙に捺印して交付してくれました。戻ってきてよかったです。言葉の端々に、イタリア人ではないかと思わせるものがあったので、聞いてみたらそうでした。それから別れるまでいろいろとイタリア語で話しました。かれは、Alyscanへぜひ行ったらいいと言い、道順を丁寧に説明してくれました。20分ぐらい歩いて行ってみました。地図にはカミノの起点とかいてあり、アルルの道の起点に着いたのでとても興奮しました。入口の係の人は、クレデンシャルにスタンプをくれて、巡礼は入場無料だと言ってくれました。彼女は、Saint Trohime の Cloister に行ったらいいと勧めてくれました。Alyscanの中には、石の棺桶が沢山並んでいて、以前はゴッホ、ゴーギャンなどが絵を描きに来ていたそうです。墓地の出口付近に、確かに左Saint Jaques de Compostelle 1560km 右Rome GR653D 1364km との表示がありここが起点とわかりました。同時に、私の次の巡礼の目標が「アルル―ローマの巡礼」となりました。Saint Trohime の Cloisterに寄ってスタンプをもらいました。それから、出発後の道順を確かめるために、地図の通りに歩いてみました。カミノが市内のどの道を通るのか地図によって少しずつ違うのですが、それは無視して、川を渡り、歩道のない自動車道をしばらく歩いてみました。Evianを3リットル買ってホテルに戻りました。携帯電話はまだ通じないので、ホテルの電話で長女の尚子と話していろいろやってみましたが、繋がりません。ホテルのフロントにもヘルプを頼みましたが、やはり通じませんでした。
