Today’s 24km was too much to walk in one day. So, took taxi for the first 8km to the town of Codognan. Taxi driver knew Camino well and dropped me off just outside of the town.
Trail goes into farming road (road to be used by the farmers with tractors) then into industrial area. In about 2 hours, arrived at Garagues on the hill. Appeared to be a nice town. Then met with a river, La Vidourle and river bank was built very high. Walked along the river and riverbank for over an hour. Hot and dry. Finally came to a bridge to go across. At the western side of the bridge , there was a picnic bench, first time to see such a thing on this trip. I was resting there and here comes a tall couple appeared to be real pilgrims. Of course, they were Duch. Tall and speaks several languages. They walked from Rome to French border. Then resumed from Arles this time. My 1600km is nothing to them. No wonder Japan kept trading with Duch while other countries are not allowed in the Tokugawa era. I left first and climbed a hill. At the hilltop, came this couple. Very fast. They passed me easily. View from this hilltop was beautiful. However, downhill was very rocky and needed medium grade hiking skill. At the foot of the hill, trail marker was confusing and I was off-trail for a while. But arrived safely to the Chambres d’Hotels. The host prepared a good dinner for me.

2022.0604(土）カミノ・100日巡礼のうち、4日目

24㎞は無理とわかっていたので、Codognanという村まで約8㎞の間タクシーを使いました。村外れから歩き出しました。畑の外側をめぐる農道から、倉庫などがあるIndustrial Areaになり、2時間で丘の上の村、Garaguesに着きました。なかなかいい村のようでした。それから、La Vidourle川とその堤防にいきあたり、堤防はかなり高いものでした。堤防にそって一時間以上歩きました。炎天下、暑くて、乾いた道でした。橋に着きましたので、川を渡りました。川の西側は、Villetelleという村で、ピクニックベンチがあり、今回のカミノで初めてのものです。そこで休んでいましたら、本物の巡礼と思しきカップルがやってきました。背が高く数か国語を話すみたいで、勿論オランダ人でした。ローマからイタリア・フランス国境まで歩いて、二週間サルデニア島で休養し、アルルからまた歩き始めたとのこと。足が速い人たちでした。不思議なことに、この人たちにはこれから何度かお会いするのですが、この時には知る由もありませんでした。私の1600㎞なんかは、彼らにとっては児戯に等しいものでしょう。徳川時代に鎖国をしながらも、オランダとは通商していたという理由がなんかわかりそうです。私が先に出発し、丘を登り始めました。丘の頂上て彼らに追い付かれてしまいました。とても早く歩く人たちで、易々と私を抜いていきました。丘の上からの眺めは、とてもきれいでした。しかし、下りは石がゴロゴロしていて、中級程度のハイキング技術がいると思いました。麓では、道標が正しくなくて、私はカミノから外れて歩いていました。それでも目的地の宿には着けました。民宿のようなもので、宿の亭主は、おいしい夕食を作ってくれました。おかげで今日の16㎞は難なく歩けました。
