2022.6028.(Tue) Resting day in Toulouse
Carcassonne is not on the Camino but a friend of mine, Mr. O recommended to visit. I thought its far away but discovered it was only an hour away from Toulouse by train. But before I go, I had to buy lens because what I had was not performing correctly.
First, I went to camera store near the train station and they only had Nikkor 18-55mm at E350. I did not think it can replace Tamron 15-270mm and went to 2nd store. They had Nikkor 18-85mm used at E290. It was not enough but this was what I could get in this town and decided to buy.
In the afternoon, took an hour of train ride to Carcassonne. It was a huge city surrounded by the walls. Please refer Wikipedia and other writings for it appears too much for me to explain this city of World Heritage. One exception is the story of Lady Carcas. Following is from Wikipedia.
The legend takes place in the 8th century, during the wars between Christians and Muslims in the southwest of Europe. At the time, Carcassonne was under Saracen rule and Charlemagne‘s army was at the gates to reconquer the city for the Franks. A Saracen princess named Carcas ruled the Knights of the City after the death of her husband.
The siege lasted for five years. Early in the sixth year, food and water were running out. Lady Carcas made an inventory of all remaining reserves. The villagers brought her a pig and a sack of wheat. She then had the idea to feed the wheat to the pig and then throw it from the highest tower of the city walls.
Charlemagne lifted the siege, believing that the city had enough food to the point of wasting pigs fed with wheat. Overjoyed by the success of her plan, Lady Carcas decided to sound all the bells in the city. One of Charlemagne’s men then exclaimed: “Carcas sonne!” (which means “Carcas rings”). Hence the name of the city.
休養日なんですが、カメラのレンズがおかしいのです。カメラはNikon D5500, レンズはTamron18-270 のいずれも最軽量、両方合わせても900ｇというモノで、来る前に一度落としたのですが、その後ちゃんと働いていました。ところが、2日前から上辺に黒いものがランダムに映るのです。これでは後2か月は撮れないと思いました。ホテルで調べてもらったら、カメラ屋は3軒あるというので、これらを回りました。でも、いずれの店もTamronは聞いたことはあるが見たことがない。Nikonのレンズならあるのですが、重い。結局Nikon 16-85mmUSEDを295ユーロで買いました。それしかないので、仕方ありません。
午後は、カミノを外れて汽車でカルカッソンヌへ行って、有名なお城を見学してきました。知人のＯ氏から是非行ってこいと勧められていたものです。Toulouseの汽車の駅で券売機のフランス語がよくわからず、人に助けてもらいました。カルカッソンヌに着いて、タクシーで城に行きました。最初に城壁の周りを歩いて回りましたら、一時間ほどかかりました。巨大な城です。それから中に入ると、町が一つすっぽりと入っており、ホテルもレストランも何軒かあったので驚きました。城が大きすぎて、なかなか写真が撮れず、城の全景を撮るために歩いて駅まで戻りました。世界遺産カルカッソンヌに就いては、私の表現力でお伝えするのは困難であり、既存のWikipedhia 等の文献を参照ください。ここでは、Wikipediaより、8世紀の話として、「女領主カルカス の伝説」のみ紹介いたします。
「女領主カルカス (Dame Carcas) の伝説」は、カルカソンヌの名の由来を説明しようとするものである。サラセン人の占領下にあった頃、侵略しようとしたカール大帝は市門の前に陣を敷き攻囲戦を行った。この攻囲は五年を超えたが、この時、夫の大公亡き後シテの騎士団を率いていたのが、公妃カルカスであった。
攻囲が六年目に入ったとき、シテの内側では兵糧も水もなくなりかけていた。カルカスは残っているものの一覧を作ろうとしたときに、市民は豚一頭と小麦の袋をもってきた。彼女はこれを見て一計を案じ、豚に小麦を食わせて太らせた上で、塔から市外へと放り捨てた。
これを見たカール大帝とその部下たちは、太った豚を惜しげもなく捨てるのだから、市内にはまだ十分な兵糧があるに違いないと考え、撤退を決めた。カルカスはその勝利を祝福し、町中の鐘を鳴らさせた。撤退中の大帝軍の一人はこう書き記した。「カルカスが鐘を鳴らしている（Carcas sonne ; カルカ・ソンヌ）」と。伝説では、これが市の名前の由来になったのだという。
