毎年9月になると、茗荷はできたかと聞く人がいるので、収穫をするのであるが、その方が日本に行ったまま帰ってこないので、収穫時期を逃しそうになった。昨年もその人は日本だったので、収穫した茗荷は、友人たちに分配した。今年もそうするつもりである。昨日に続いて今日もいい天気なので、この機会にと思って、茗荷畑を掘った。今年は雨が多かったせいか、豊作と言える。収穫量は（ちゃんと数えてはないが）おそらく250個前後であろう。
もう20年も前になろうか、合唱団の橋本さんから両手に載る程度の苗を分けてもらった。最初はプールの家の敷地に沿ったところに植えておいたが、つつましくだが着実に面積を増やしてきたので、デッキのそばのキュウリ畑に植え替えた。ここでも増えてくるので、キュウリを新しく作った野菜畑に移した。5－6年前に近藤さんが引っ越すというので、彼女の畑にあった茗荷をもらってきた。これで、デッキのそばは、茗荷畑になった。橋本さんのものとちょっと種類が違うのか、近藤さんの方が大きい。いずれにせよ、それから9月になると茗荷の収穫をしている。
それから、加代子の日課になったCrest まで登る。月が出たところで、マンハッタンも月も夕日を浴びている。

マンハッタンの家賃が急上昇中
9月19日の日曜日のNYマンハッタンです。
さて、去年コロナ禍パンデミックの真っ只中にあったNYマンハッタンではアパートの家賃がびっくりするほど急落しましたな。
しかし社会生活・経済生活がコロナ禍前に戻りつつある中、家賃は急騰してますねん。家賃が急落した昨年に契約を結んだ借り主を対象に、家主が家賃を大幅に引き上げてるそうです。その値上げ率は50～70％になってるそうです。
賃貸アパート検索サイトのStreetEasyによると、マンハッタンにおける7月の希望家賃の中央値は3,000ドルに上昇し、2020年７月以来の高水準を記録したそうです。ちなみにコロナ禍での最低値は2021年1月の2,750ドルでした。マンハッタン全体で見たら、家賃はまだコロナ禍前を下回ってますねんな。
但し、Flatiron、East Village、Financial District、Nolitaなどの特に人気の高いエリアでは家賃はコロナ禍前を上回る水準に上昇してるんやそうです。
そうそう、値段が上がってるけど、新規物件はすぐに契約者が現れてるんやて。。。

世界貿易センター崩壊－（7）
昨日（６）にて、ブレア首相訪米は本日とお伝えしましたが、明日9/20の誤りでしたので、お詫び致します。本日は世界最大のイスラム人口を有するインドネシア大統領が訪米、大統領としました。また、ロシアのイワノフ外務大臣がパウエル国務長官と会談しました。ラムズフェルド国防長官は、第一回展開命令に署名、これにより空母などが出港しました。明晩9時より、上下院合同議会および国民にたいし、大統領がメッセージを伝えるとのことです。
NYでは、行方不明者数は5422と変わらず、死者は218名、内身元確認できた人数は152名との事です。1970年代半ばに ハートマークをあしらった I LOVE NEW YORK.というコピーを考えた Mr．Glaser は、今回のテロ攻撃を表現するため、I LOVE NEW YORK, MORE THAN EVER.とし、ハートマークも変えるとの事です。
最近、米国人の間で、カナダのTVコメンテイターによるアメリカ賞賛のメッセージが静かな人気を呼んでいるようで、筆者も複数の方よりメールをもらいました。本日、筆者はカナダの会社への緊急経営指導の為出張中ですが、安全上飛行機が使えない為、車にてNYスルーウエーをトロントに向かって疾駆していました。 その途中で、奇しくもラジオ番組で、この文章をホストが読み上げましたが、途中で感きわまり、感激のあまり絶句するという場面にぶつかりましたので、皆様とシェア-致したいと思います。

America: The Good Neighbor.
Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: “This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth.
Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.
When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.
When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.
The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars! into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.
I’d like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10?
If so, why don’t they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?
Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.
You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon -! not once, but several times – and safely home again.
You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.
When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.
I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don’t think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.
Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I’m one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those.”
